Keke Palmer to Star in TV Adaptation of The 'Burbs on Peacock

A TV adaptation of the 1989 dark comedy film "The ‘Burbs" is in the works, and "Nope" actress Keke Palmer is set to star. The Peacock series will be written and executive produced by Celeste Hughey, known for her work on Palm Royale and Dead to Me. Seth MacFarlane and Brian Grazer will also serve as executive producers through their respective production companies, Fuzzy Door and Imagine Entertainment, with Dana Olsen, the film's original screenwriter, as a co-executive producer. Like the original movie, the series will be filmed on the Universal Studios backlot.

"The ‘Burbs" film starred Tom Hanks, Carrie Fisher, and Bruce Dern, and follows a suburban neighborhood that suspects their new neighbors of being ritualistic murderers. The cult classic earned $49 million at the box office against an $18 million budget. In the upcoming TV series, the story shifts to a present-day suburban setting, where a young couple, including Palmer's character, returns to the husband's childhood home, only to face new dangers when mysterious neighbors move in next door.

Palmer, widely recognized for her roles in films and series like Nope, Hustlers, and Akeelah and the Bee, will also serve as an executive producer. The adaptation is part of Peacock's growing trend of rebooting or adapting Universal Pictures' properties, which includes titles like Ted and Bel-Air.

Fuzzy Door, MacFarlane's production company, is behind several projects at Peacock, including the Ted prequel series, while Imagine Entertainment's recent credits include Under the Banner of Heaven and Swagger. This series adaptation of The ‘Burbs continues Peacock's momentum in delivering mystery comedies, as seen in other recent hits like Poker Face and Based On a True Story.
